The Department of Physics at Nowgong College, established on March 1, 1953, under the visionary leadership of Late Kailash Chakrawarty, a distinguished former professor of Presidency College, Calcutta, has been a cornerstone of quality education in Physics in this region of Assam. Since its inception, the department has been dedicated to nurturing academic excellence and attracting students not only from the Nowgong district but also from neighboring districts such as Morigaon, Golaghat, and Karbi Anglong.
The department offers a robust undergraduate honors program in Physics, complemented by a certificate course on basic electrical circuits and maintenance. It also conducts an array of skill development programs designed to empower undergraduate students with practical competencies. In a significant stride towards academic expansion, the department introduced a postgraduate program in Physics in 2024, marking a new chapter in its illustrious history. This initiative reflects the department’s unwavering commitment to fostering advanced education and cultivating a generation of skilled physicists.
